A planet for the 99%
A planet for the 99%
Introduction: Inequality is on the rise within most countries of the world. This is not only a social but also an ecological problem since the world's richest people are also the world's biggest polluters. The topmost 10% of the wealth distribution are responsible for 50% of all emissions, and contributions to climate change are even more disproportionate in the higher quantiles. And there is more: equality correlates with social cohesion and trust so that increasing inequality is one of the very factors that divert attention away from sustainability. Tackling inequality is thus key for getting to grips with the climate crisis and to bounce back into our planetary boundaries. Following a keynote by Kate Pickett, we discuss with our panelists the multiple connections between inequality and sustainability as well as possible solutions both at the global scale and in the Swiss context.
The audience will be allowed to ask questions and the panel will be followed by a flashmob illustrating social inequality as well as an apéro.
